In the task two, I was inspired by the park near my neighborhood, I tended to observe the plants and facilities in the park. I used watercolour, pastels, crayons, coloured pencils, acrylic, and iPad to illustrate the patterns. 

    When I was walking in the park, I found out that there were so many interesting elements that I can use for this task. Most of the patterns were based on plants’ shape and the texture of them, for example, the first two pictures described the shape and the leaf’s texture of pine when sun shine on it. Another interesting discovering was I found a kind of tree that grew eye shape patterns naturally, I used this while I was create patterns which should be     obvious in my blog.

I enjoyed the walking in the park, but I was not satisfying with the works I have down, one of the reasons might be I was too familiar with the environment in the park, so I cannot find new point of view of those sights. Hope next time I could down better. 

Talking Patterns

I draw these drawings from one photo when I took during my traveling. I was on a ship in the lake and the spindrift appear during this situation. I use some different material to draw and make the shape like the spindrift. Like the two kinds of heat shrinkable,plastic wrap, plastic bag. And I also draw the shape of the spindrift use different ways and colors. Then I use the drawings make up some patterns. 

In the task 2, I considered how to combine my drawing with embroidery. In order to explore what I see. I draw some patterns in mix media.

In these sketches, I tried to use colour pencil, marks and so on. For the ear one, I think the colour graffiti is easy to express by sticking, which can using my workshop knowledge. Besides, for the jellyfish, I really interested of their shape. So I want to use the shape on my embroidery design. However, I also have some weaknesses. I think my sketches are not media. In my mind, It’s all too concrete.

For the development plan, I want to zoom those sketches, let them become more like pattern.

Talking Colors

During 2021 is one difficult year for me. There were a lots of things happen and made me feel unhappy. One of the bad things was about my relationship with my ex. There was a period make me feel dim since us quarrel to each other and broke up. And these drawing are describe my feeling at this period. My personal world was dark at that time. In real life I can’t distinguish the day and night because I can’t sleep without drinking some alcohol. I use some dark and light color together to show my inner entanglement and regrets for the memory between us. I use some different materials to draw like the watercolor, acrylic paint, ink, pigment for Chinese painting, crayon. And one of the drawing I also combined with Chinese paper cutting.

Talking patterns was a fun continuation of talking colors for me. After our trip to the Victoria and Albert Museum, I went over to the Natural History Museum. Many of my drawings were inspired from the Natural History’s Museum gem section. The staggering amount of colors, shapes, and sizes was fascinating. By focusing on the details of the stones as well as my environment- I noticed how much pattern and flow there is in the world. I kept seeing design patterns in buildings, walls, street signs, pavements, paint, and nature. Once I started to pay attention- I couldn’t stop. I would like to learn how to translate what I see- texture, color, and layers onto fabric in a 3D, sculptural sort of way. My greatest takeaway from this task was being able to realize the unbelievable amount of pattern and design that exists all around us- in our day-to-day lives.

For the second task, applying to the brief again, I wanted to focus more into the patterns and shapes and textures of what I saw around me. I wanted to have a more unconventional approach into this and I looked at shapes and colours and then made my own patterns from this. I used images from London on my phone as well as objects just from my room. I experimented with pens and crayons more and really enjoyed this way of working. i felt some of these pieces took less time and were very free and others were more accurate and precise as I created them. I also really zoomed into textures of items and things I saw such as everyday objects like the dots on my Bluetooth speaker and the patterns on clothing and more. I created my own way of seeing things and formed new designs out of them.

Through this task I explored how pattern is within everything around us. Specifically, when travelling through London I found patterns within buildings, objects, people and nature- all of which I wanted to explore further through this task.

I used mixed media to explore pattern. Inspired by my surroundings I experimented with texture to highlight pattern. Through exploring pattern, I found rubbish around me, that contained both pattern and texture. I found that this effectively communicated this. I found that working on small drawings allowed me to add detail however I found that through high detail you can loose the simplicity of a pattern.

Overall, I found this task effective in my learning of pattern. Through experimentation I was also drawn to what could come of a textile piece inspired by pattern and texture- this is possibly something I would explore more through my work.

I visited East London with my groupmates and discovered many places such as city farm, god’s own junk yard, Columbia flower market, Brick Lane. The place that most attract and inspire me is God’s Own Junk Yard. I took many photos there and used some of the colours and structures to start with. I tried different colour materials such as water colour, crayon, mark pen, acrylic and just play with the colours to try different results. It’s really great to see different outcomes using different colour materials and it inspires me a lot. It’s also great to try different colour materials mix and overlap together.

For task 1 I wanted to focus on looking at colours throughout my daily life. I was especially inspired by my time exploring around West and North London. I was intrigued by how bright and colourful some areas of London were, especially in Camden Town. Camden town, where you walk on the streets and see many colourful buildings, and walls which are highlighted with graffiti art all over. Underneath are some of my sketches I drew.

I used a variety of different medias when drawing. I used pencils, fine liners, felt tip pens, colour crayons, watercolours, acrylic paint, embroidery, foil and glue and photoshop. I worked best when using felt tip pens but also photoshop. I liked the vibrance of the felt tip pens when it touched the white paper. However, using photoshop was also great because when I changed the hue and saturation and added filters, it emphasised my sketches more especially the drawings of graffiti.

Overall, I found this task effective in understanding the way I see colour around my surroundings. My next stage will be to explore how I can incorporate these colours when creating my textile samples. This can be by the choice of colour threads I use but also the fabric. This is something which I will further explore.

In the task talking colour, I wanted to use the brief to explore areas of London I hadn’t before. Therefore, I specifically chose Kew Gardens and Kensington Palace Gardens, areas of West London as my focus points. I found the process of taking photos very rewarding and I enjoyed sourcing tools and equipment to create these pieces of art. Not only this, but I also decided to incorporate my new knowledge from a lecture of colour palettes and use a limited palette with similar shades in each separate piece. This made the end result extremely satisfying to see the pieces as more of a collection together. I experimented with watercolour, pastels, pencil shading, newspaper, dissolvable fabric, fine liner pens and many more art tools to manipulate my pieces in the way I wanted. I found that I chose the type of style or pen/paint based on what I was drawing to capture it in its full essence. This has been a very enriching project.
