For task 2 I wanted to focus on seeing patterns and textures throughout my daily life. My inspiration came from travelling from Milton Keynes to London and seeing the way some patterns changed between the two cities. Underneath are some of my sketches I drew, showing the step-by-step journey and the patterns I saw.
Many of my drawings involved shapes and lines, all reflected from looking at train tracks, tunnels, seats and many more. I used different medias to explore patterns. I used pencils, fine liners, colour crayons, felt tip pens and photoshop. I thought using these medias were effective as they highlighted the patterns and textures. I worked best when using sharp pencils and fine liners as it allowed me to go into more detail in some areas.
Overall, I have found this task effective in understanding the way I see patterns. My next stage will be to explore how I can incorporate these patterns and textures using embroidery in my textile pieces.
In the task 2 – talking patterns, I extracted the colors from the task 1 and then extended some colors and patterns of garbage in task 1. In task 2, I began to focus more on the relationship between the environment and small objects rely on them. I looked at the way the bags wound around each other and made some patterns of color blocks. And I also used the plastic bottle and burn it, smash it and then I applied the acrylic on the surface of the bottle and I recombined the plastic bottle with some waste burlap bags with admitting distortion methods. Then I used embroidery and stitching to connect them together. Besides, I looked at the sculptures and drew some drawings according to the silhouettes of the sculpture. And I finally got some interesting and beautiful shapes and patterns. I would like to follow these patterns and make more experiment and development. Also they can be an interesting part of my further embroidery works.
In task 1, I went to the flower shop and I looked at some photos I took before in Brick Lane in East London. I found some beautiful and colorful flowers, their internal petal structure is also very attractive to me, there are some curves. So I used the water colour and acrylic and had some drawings on paper. Well, I also went to some places, and I observed some of the garbage, the beer LIDS on the ground, and the cigarette butts and the dirt, and they formed some colorful patterns. I was very interested in these curved shapes and colors, and then I found that the patterns on my cat’s body were very similar, because my cat was an ocelot, so they had some leopard patterns on their body, and leopard patterns would have curved shapes and patterns, as well as changes in depth.

In this task ‘Way of Seeing’ and ‘Talking Patterns’, the main objective of this is to introduce me to research methods/analysis, pattern making/development through the use of practical and critical observations. I feel like I was quite successful in this task in which I will be expanding upon later. Using the skills and experience that I have obtained from task 1, I really wanted to build on the critiques that I gave myself and create new and innovative textures and patterns by making use of observations from my daily life, new research from museums, and existing research that I didn’t get the chance to use.
An idea that I chose to develop further into my task 2 from task 1 is the painting that I did of the Grenfell mural in Ladbroke Grove. I developed four more patterns and textures, taking inspiration from the shapes and colour palette. I simplified the hearts and leaves into just plain hearts of different colours, but still keeping the original colour palette of green earth tones. I made this decision because after doing some research behind the Grenfell Tower, the green represents the tragedy of the fire that killed 72 people, so I thought it was only appropriate that I don’t take away the meaning and purpose of the original artwork. I played with oil pastels again but combined it with acrylic paint this time to see what sort of texture that I would get. The acrylic paint didn’t really mix well with the oil pastels as it glided off the waxy surface and made a dough-like substance when I tried blending it in with a paintbrush. I think this was due to my paint being too dry as I left it out on my palette for too long. I still wanted to incorporate the acrylic paint into my drawing so I just rolled the dough of oil pastel and paint into a ball and spread it onto the paper. This technique worked and created a rough texture to the surface when it fully dried – this reminded me of the texture of the brick wall that the mural was created on. From that, I moved onto making collages of hearts made from that pattern and also from a brown paper bag.
My other inspirations come from bubbles in the sink from washing the dishes, a garment and some ceramics from the V&A museum, tree stumps from the Natural History museum, a stack of painted tires found in Portobello Market, stickers from a McDonald’s happy meal toy, and even some drawings that I saw whilst watching a Korean television series. I find it fascinating that I was able to be inspired by lots of seemingly random items, but that just proves that pattern can be made from absolutely anything!
Some examples where I have clearly explored my ways of seeing can be found in images 1 & 11 (oil pastel drawings of flowers and patterns inspired by Korean ceramics). I have considered the scale of the flowers in image 1 where I zoomed in and out of the garment and drew from it. I think this is a great way of picturing different scales of patterns to see which ones work well, whether you prefer more big and close up patterns or more concentrated and smaller patterns. For the eight little pattern drawings, I zoomed into the carved sections of the ceramics that are made up of coloured layers. I focused on the pattern inside the crevices, but as you step away from the ceramics, you can’t really see the pattern inside. I wanted to bring emphasis to the hidden pattern inside by producing my own exaggerated and colourful version of it.
Overall, I feel like I have understood the brief well and have experimented with lots of different patterns on different medias. In task 1, I mentioned that I could work on different surfaces so this time I chose to paint on a ketchup bottle to see how a pattern would look on a 3D object. I now have a better understanding of the way I see patterns. To develop my work further, I should think about how to translate these ideas and drawings into embroidery for textiles. I also want to give digital art a go and editing in photoshop for even more possibilities that I wouldn’t necessarily achieve on paper.
My inspiration comes from the experience of going to the club for the first time in my life. To be honest, I don’t like this feeling, but it’s a special experience.
I drew my memory of that night: the emotional crowd, crazy girls who were dancing, dazzling flashlights, strong drinks, and my own reactions, listening to noisy music in the club, my heart seemed to jump out of my rib cage, and there was diffuse smoke made me dizzy. Anyway, it was an interesting experience. I think there were a lots of things that I can use it on my further embroidery works.
For the second task I wanted to explore more different ways of creating my designs, compared to task 1 – I wanted to experiment with creating digital drawings, hence why a lot of my drawings were created on Procreate. I took inspiration from the things around me, and the different shapes I could see. For example, I took inspiration from the streets and different shapes I could see in signs or on walls. I also took inspiration from the V&A, where I explored many different types of art. I was especially inspired by their embroidery exhibit, and I took a lot of influence from the shapes and patterns I could see within those. Also, to look at things from a different perspective, I decided to zoom in on an image of strawberries to draw them in a new way. I also wanted to emphasise my love of patterns, so I joined some of my drawing together to create a different patterns – enabling me to view my designs from a different perspective and experiment more.
In this talking pattern task, few works color inspiration came from the Chinese poster during the 1980S. then I use the similar colors combination to create the own designed checker. I used some irregular shape to use in the checker. During the process that I researched the 1980S poster, I found the lots of interesting colors combination. I visited the gallery that exhibit the textile design with different mixed media. For instance, they used different paillette and also added the cotton fabric with pattern to create the different texture. I used the circle to express. Besides, there is a mixed media artwork quiet inspired me. It’s mixed the different media. Such as the glue and acrylic. In this task, I put more emphasis on develop the pattern. Perhaps, I will more focus on experiment and try more kind of media on the next stage.
My inspiration comes from the patterns from fashion runway, cafe and some cloths. I was attracted by the pink curtain made of velvet in shushu/tong 2022runway, and really like its silky and fuzzy texture. This curtain really gave me a wonderful memory of fashion week. I was also inspired by an exhibition about light and shadow, in which the artist created a dreamy world with mirrors and light. One of the most attractive to me is a piece of green light composed of water lily pool.Thin green lights streaked across the round mirror like ripples on a summer lotus pool. Finally, I would like to talk about the light brown painting. My inspiration comes from the linen texture of the curtain fabric, which is very rough and semi-transparent.It gives a warm and thick feeling, like a field or grassland

For this unit the task was patterns, to demonstrate this I firstly drew a range of objects in mixed media (following on from unit one) yet, instead of using one shade through my drawings I enphasised my lines and strokes as well as the colours I was observing in the images to experiment on the patterns I could create within them. To make this more effective I made sure to use objects involving glass or a clear surface that reflected the light or allowed me to see through into the other side, this allowed me to be more abstract and creative. To then allaborate on these I used photo-shop to edit a few images, experimenting on how the lines and strokes could be viewed differently if the colours/lighting was altered. I then wanted to go back to the brief and create repeated patterns using my edited photos. overall I believe this went well due to my repeated pattern outcomes as well as the experimental process throughout as I have gained skills in photoshop and have expanding my drawing techniques.
In Task2, I was inspired by American illustrator Jayde Fish’s suzhou Garden, which is a very large painting with a size of 300*180*5cm. According to this brief, I tried to find some interesting patterns in this work, so I found the stones in the garden and the pillars in the courtyard. The shapes of the stones are very rich, and each of them is almost different in size/shape. It is just because of this that they look natural. In my paintings, I try to draw stones of different sizes and combine them in a collage way. At the same time, red columns in the courtyard combine with the irregularity of the stone. The texture of the column itself is very solid, but in my painting I made it very soft and easy to put different shapes, which is my understanding in this painting and the inspiration and attempt brought to me.
