molly byrne – way of thinking, seeing pattern

I based the first group of drawings on some mark making I really liked in my colour drawings. The second group of drawings were based on some patterns I had seen in tube stations while I was traveling around London. I really like the way the cutout could be its own piece or used with another drawing.

Hi Molly!
I’ve noticed that you’re quite fond of the theme of nature, especially botanicals, florals and fruits which I can see in your work between both tasks. I think you’ve understood the brief quite well as evidenced through your experimentations of colour and pattern making. I think it’s quite unique how you chose to use nectarine juice as a medium. The marks from it are quite light and delicate, but also quite concentrated in some areas in the centre. I see you’ve made use of these juice marks to add texture to your pencil drawing which I find very effective. Maybe you could try out flower pounding if you like light delicate marks. I admire how you take inspiration from your surroundings when travelling around London. I believe as a designer, this is an essential skill in which you’ve demonstrated in your observations of patterns that you saw in tube stations. Maybe you could use your cutwork and lay it over your other existing drawings to really experiment with different outcomes. I’ve also noticed that you have used other materials such as plastic, tissue paper and ribbon to layer over the paper. My personal favourites are your floral pieces; how you’ve used paint marker to draw over different mediums such as watercolour, acrylic and coloured pencils. I think paint markers are a great way of adding solid colours to your artwork and they really stand out due to their opacity and brightness. Lastly, I want to comment on how well you’ve interpreted your mark making from your colour drawings. I can tell that you’ve developed your marks from filtering out different features of the plant and then really playing with the pattern and textures before developing them into something completely different from the drawings that you first started with. I think in the future, you could consider working with more different mediums to create more dimension in your work.
